Are you afraid of FORBIDDEN FOODS?

A client recently shared this thought with me:

“Understanding that I can eat those forbidden foods helps me realize I have the power to choose.”

I invited her to consider her words and thoughts.

Forbidden means NOT PERMITTED or ALLOWED.

My guidelines for foods that aren’t permitted or allowed is this: any food you have an allergy or intolerance to, or that you don’t like.

Because why eat food you don’t like? Life’s too short.

Things that are FORBIDDEN make you feel anxious.

If you saw a private entrance labeled “FORBIDDEN ACCESS” and entered anyway, would you feel good about that decision?

No. You’d feel anxious and nervous.

When you label foods as “forbidden” and eat them anyway, do you feel good about that decision and enjoy the food?

No. You feel anxious and guilty.

It’s common to make food the enemy, because it’s an easy way to displace your fear.

Your fear isn’t about the food, it’s about the cancer returning.

Consider this.

The same recommendations about food and health existed before your cancer, for example, the link between diet and diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Then? You likely ignored those recommendations.

Now? Not only do you pay close attention to diet and disease recommendations, you’ve created your own rigid health “rules” to add to them!

You’re STACKING FEAR ON TOP OF FEAR.

Eating the wrong food now means:

  • Cancer recurrence
  • Inability to stop eating that “wrong” food
  • Being frustrated with yourself because you have NO WILLPOWER

Listen. Food is not the enemy.

Food is neutral.

Food gives your body energy, vitamins and minerals. Food provides beneficial compounds that support health and vitality.

If you want to stop white-knuckling your way through survivorship, you must change the label you’ve given food.

Choose food based on how it makes you FEEL (energized, happy, satisfied), rather than out of virtue, anxiety or fear.

I promise you this.

Changing the way you THINK about food is the first step to changing your RELATIONSHIP with food, and changing your relationship with food moves you toward PEACE OF MIND.
