All of my work through dam. mad. revolves around inspiring and educating women on how to BITE back (nutrition), MOVE back (fitness) and STRIKE back (wellness) at breast cancer.

BITE Back. MOVE Back. STRIKE Back.

It’s my tagline. It’s my jam.

If you follow my work, you already know that.

When I use the word nutrition in my writing, speaking to a group, or in general conversation, people get a mental picture of what I’m talking about.

Same goes for fitness. They “get” what it is without any further explanation.

But when I say the word wellness? That’s a little trickier.

Wellness can mean different things to different people – people all have their own definition of what “wellness” is.

Defining Wellness and Well-being

What do you think of when you hear wellness

Dictionary.com defines WELLNESS like this:

noun

  • the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
  • an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposedto emphasizing treating diseases.

And WELL-BEING like this:

noun

  • a good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness, and prosperity; welfare.

It’s my personal philosophy that you can’t have well-being without wellness.

How can you be healthy, happy and prosperous if you’re not healthy in mind and body?

When it comes to your own life, what deliberate effort are you doing on a regular basis to ensure your wellness?

  • Maybe you’re deliberate about cooking at home more often than you eat out.
  • Maybe you get 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 times each week.
  • Maybe you practice silence and do inspirational reading to start your day.

Great!

But maybe you’re doing nothing deliberate about your wellness.

How to Get Busy Tending Your Well-being

Here’s an exercise to help you get started.

Ask yourself this question.

“What’s one thing I could do, that if I did it on a consistent basis, would make a positive impact on my level of wellness?

And, by extension, my well-being.”

  • Name it.
  • Envision it.
  • Write it down.
  • Put it where you’ll see it daily.
  • Practice it.

To increase the odds of you sticking to your wellness effort, think about doing this:

  • Get support
  • Find an accountability partner.
  • Honor your body, mind and soul.

Your well-being hinges on the state of your wellness, so don’t put it off another day. Start slowly, be deliberate, and you’ll soon reap the rewards.
